Cover art size for Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube

Make your cover a perfect square of at least 4000 x 4000 pixels, in RGB, as a JPG or a PNG. That meets Apple Music's minimum and sits well inside Spotify's range of 640 to 10,000 pixels. For YouTube you also need a wide 16:9 version, ideally 1280 x 720 pixels for the thumbnail.

One square master at 4000 x 4000 pixels or more covers both stores. Spotify asks for the highest resolution available, with the sRGB colour profile applied to the image, and for images that were not upscaled.
What gets cover art rejected
Apple Music lists what it does not allow on cover art. The main points:
- Text other than the artist name and the release or song title.
- Social media handles, email addresses, websites or other extra information.
- Prices, advertising, dates or barcodes.
- Blurry, pixelated, tilted or cropped images, unless that is the intended style.
- Images from other copyright holders without written permission.
- A Parental Advisory logo on a release that is not explicit.
Design for the smallest size first
Your cover is seen far more often as a small square on a phone than as a 4000-pixel image. In our studio we check every cover at thumbnail size: one strong image, the names readable or left out, and contrast that holds up on a dark and a light screen.
One cover, every format
A single usually needs the square cover for the stores, a wide version for YouTube, a vertical version for Stories and Reels, and often a moving version: a Spotify Canvas or an animated cover. Our single cover packages come in all of these sizes.

What is the best size for cover art?
A square of at least 4000 x 4000 pixels. It meets Apple Music's minimum and fits Spotify's range of 640 to 10,000 pixels.
Is 3000 x 3000 big enough?
For Spotify, yes. Apple Music asks for at least 4000 x 4000, so use 4000 if your release goes to Apple Music too.
Should cover art be RGB or CMYK?
RGB: Spotify asks for the sRGB colour space. CMYK is for print, such as a vinyl sleeve or a CD booklet.
Can I put my Instagram handle on the cover?
Not for Apple Music, which rejects social media handles, websites and email addresses on cover art.
